Training of lawyers "Hate crimes against LGBTI persons"




On June 5th and 6th, 2021, Deystvie will hold a training for lawyers. The topic of the training will be "Hate crimes against LGBTI persons, complaints to the ECtHR and preliminary references to the ECJ".


The lecturers of the training will be Krasimir Kanev - Chairman of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, Assoc. Kliment Ohridski" and lawyer. Denitsa Lyubenova from the LGBTI organization "Deysvie".


In 2018 and 2019, the LGBT organization Deystvie filed dozens of cases on LGBTI issues. These included claims for international protection; cases of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and/or gender identity; cases concerning the right to reside in Bulgaria of a partner in a same-sex couple; claims for citizenship of a person-spouse in a same-sex relationship, status of children born in a same-sex relationship, claims for international child abduction in same-sex relationships; personal injury of LGBTI persons because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Complaints to the European Court of Human Rights, as well as complaints for breach of European Union law.


In 2020, LGBT Deystvie is committed to finding more allies among fellow lawyers. Our goal is to create a community of lawyers across the country who we can rely on to treat LGBTI people with the respect and professionalism they deserve. To this end, Action has launched a series of training sessions for lawyers and junior lawyers in four main areas:

The training "Hate crimes against LGBTI people and complaints to the ECHR" will be held at the Bankya Palace Hotel in Sofia. The event will take place at the Bankya Palace Hotel in Bankya on 5th and 6th June 2021. All costs for accommodation, meals and coffee breaks are provided by the LGBTI organisation "Deystvie". Also accepted are 5th year students at the Faculty of Law.
